An Original Oil Painting executed en plein air by Fine Artist Jeremiah Jolliff

This was one of the last en plein air paintings of the 2014 season before i left to go back to work in antarctica at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. When watching the video, please pay close attention to the drawing of the barn. I had to erase the entire thing and start anew. That is just one of the benefits of using Grumbacher Vine Charcoal and a PRISMACOLOR DESIGN Kneaded Rubber Eraser If painting outdoors werent hard enough, it is sometimes a huge obstacle just to lay in the cartoon for the composition. Often times it is better just to erase the whole thing and start over. Never be precious with a lines on a drawing but be free and brave enough to erase. The drawing after all if the foundation and without a solid foundation, the structure will crumble. Remember, painting is only drawing with a brush so be prepared to draw and re-draw the entire composition at least three or four times in one single en plein air session.

Unfortunately, I do not remember where i read it, perhaps it was in Carlson’s Guide to Landscape Painting, where he might have said that adding just a modicum of Alizarin Crimson near the horizon sends the sky hurtling back into oblivion. In this painting the sky is very pleasant to look at because it takes advantage of this peculiar phenomena. Another good reference for painting atmosphere can be found in the book entitled Landscape Painting by L. Birge Harrison. When painting en plein air, it works rather well to apply an entire coat of very thin Raw Sienna “The explanation of this is very simple – nature deals in broken color everywhere, but she never deals in broken values. The color dances, but the values stay put.” When cool overtones are placed on top of warm undertones, virbation occurs and that is the secret to making a painting with vigor and dynamism.
